3x09 The Three-Card Monty Job

(three men grab a fourth and throw him on the ground, speaking Russian)

Jimmy (takes a drink from a flask): I think he understands.

Pieter: Get up. (pulls Andrei from the ground and hands him a phone)

Andrei: This is a bomb?

Pieter: It's a phone. Now you have two choices, either you do what we're asking you to do, or I have to pay visit to Natalia and little Sasha. Eh? They go to school same way every morning. Did you know this? Is not safe.

Andrei: Anything. I'll do anything.

Pieter: Okay. What I'm asking for you to do is…

[McRory’s Pub]

Andrei (pulls phone from pocket): …answer this phone.

(Andrei puts phone on the table, Hardison picks it up)

Sophie: What are you supposed to do when they call you?

Andrei: I do whatever they ask. Then destroy the phone and tell no one, or they'll kill my children.

Nate: You, uh, install and repair telephone lines for a living?

Andrei: For 10 years. I have three major contracts right now. If I'm arrested, it all goes away.

Sophie: And you have no idea why they specifically targeted you?

Andrei: No. I'm not perfect, but I try to be a good man. My parents came to Boston to get away from this kind of thing, Russians hurting Russians.

Nate: And if you contacted the police?

Andrei: The Russians will know. They say they're watching. This bar, I've been here before. It's probably safe. And you, you're no cop.

Nate: No. I'm no cop.

Hardison: Cloned. (hands phone to Nate)

Nate: This phone rings, I want you to answer it. (hands phone to Andrei) We'll contact you.

Andrei: Thank you, Mr. Ford.

Sophie: We're not gonna let anything bad happen to your family.

Andrei: Thank you. (gets up and walks away)

Hardison: Okay, now, I put a tap on the phone, so if that thing rings, we'll know it.

Nate: All right, good. What else?

Hardison: There's one incoming call. These guys were thorough. They wanted to make sure if they called, Andrei would answer.

Nate: Yeah, they, uh, they call it once to test it.

Hardison: Exactly. So if we just call them back…

[Warehouse]

(Pieter and another man are counting money while a third watches)

Simakov: You going to get that?

(Pieter pics up the phone and answers it)

Pieter: This is Pieter. Hello? (hangs up

[McRory’s Pub]

Hardison: Marco. Polo.

(turns around the laptop to show a map)

[Exterior Warehouse]

(Eliot peeks around a corner, followed by Parker)

Eliot: You sure this is the place?

Hardison: I'm sorry, am... am I... am I sure?

[Leverage HQ]

Hardison: Eliot, what is that Russian carrying? It's called a Smartphone, okay? Smartphones read e-mails, they have GPS maps, they link to an atomic clock on this little thing called the Internet. You ever heard of it? Come on, man. Look, a Smartphone has an operating system. If it has an operating system, you know I can hack it.

(a computer beeps and the images on the monitor change)

Hardison: Okay. Think I may have just I.D.'d our bad guy. His name is Pieter Volokh. Him and his crew, they used to belong to the M-45s, ex-military hitters turned mafia boys. Now, they took a big hit in a bust last month. (whistles) They lost $20 million in merchandise to the police. That's gotta hurt.

[Exterior Warehouse]

Hardison: Okay, so... so now look. We know what they're after.

(Eliot and Parker make their way along the side of the warehouse)

[Leverage HQ]

Hardison: They're looking for a big-payout job So that they can get back on their feet. Now, I've I.D.'d the perp, I know what they want, and I know why. What did you do with your afternoon?

[Exterior Warehouse]

Eliot: I'll tell you what I'm gonna do when I get back there.

(Eliot looks into the open bay doors and sees a large black SUV. He and Parker enter carefully, looking into an office where SIMAKOV is counting money)

Parker: Think he's involved?

Eliot: It's Russian mafia. They wear their tattoos like a résumé. See that cathedral on his neck? Three spires, three tours in prison. The stars on his arm means he's a Captain.

[Leverage HQ]

Hardison: So he's the boss?

Eliot: I don't know. Probably.

[Exterior Warehouse]

Eliot: I ran into some of these cats in Petrozavodsk. They blackmail innocent people like Andrei into committing crimes and dropping off money. Then those guys get picked up by the cops or they end up dead. It's brutal.

Parker: Want me to taser him?

Nate: No tasering, Parker.

[Exterior Street]

(Nate and Sophie are walking together, following Pieter and his men)

Nate: Not yet, anyway.

Hardison: Are they still in sight?

Sophie: I hate this kind of criminal.

Nate: What exactly were you doing when I chased you?

Sophie: I stole art from rich people who could afford it. These guys? They terrorize their victims, they harm families, and the worst part? They make innocent people commit crimes.

Nate: Oh, that's the worst part?

Nate: You blackmail an innocent man into breaking the law, the rest of his life he's gonna feel shame over how you made him helpless, or guilt over what you made him do. We chose crime. Andrei didn't.

[Interior Warehouse]

(Parker is searching the SUV while Eliot keeps watch)

Eliot: Hurry up!

Parker (looking out of SUV): I hurried! Then I hurried again! I checked it three times. It's clean.

Eliot: Check it again.

(Parker ducks back into the SUV. Simakov hears something and picks up a crowbar to go check it out)

Simakov: Hey! What are you doing?

Eliot (circling him): Sh—well… Uh...

(Simakov swings the crow bar. Eliot grabs his arm and throws him on the floor.

Parker: Eliot!

(Parker throws a crowbar and hits Eliot in the back of the head)

Eliot: Mnh! Mnhhh! Uhh!

(Eliot gives her a hard look and picks up the crowbar, blocking a blow from Simakov. They exchange blows, blocking each other. Eliot hits Simakov and pushes him away)

Eliot (to Parker): You don't throw crowbars at people!

Parker: Sorry! (ducks back into SUV) "you don't throw crowbars at people!" Could have just tasered him.

[Exterior Street]

(still following Pieter and his men)

Sophie: Promise me we're gonna take these guys down hard.

Nate: I promise. Where are they going?

Sophie: I want this to be exciting and dramatic.

Nate: Well, it's already exciting. Look where they stopped.

(Pieter and his men go down the stairs toward McRory’s Pub)

Nate: They reversed the phone tap. We're blown.

Sophie: They're gonna kill Hardison.

[Leverage HQ]

Hardison: They're gonna kill who? (gets up) No, they ain't! I bet you they ain't! Nate, you better stall!

[Interior Warehouse]

Eliot: Yeah, come on.

(Simakov swings the crowbar again, Eliot catches it with his own. They both tug for a moment, then Eliot grabs the end of Simakov’s crowbar and swings the end of his up to his Simakov in the face, knocking him to the ground)

[Leverage HQ]

(Hardison has his hands full of a laptop, money, and orange soda and is on his way to the door)

Hardison: Whoa. Wait... wait a minute. Look, my only way out is the front door. Are they coming through the front door?

[Exterior Street]

Nate: I don't know.

(Sophie and Nate head for McRory’s)

Hardison: What you mean you don't know?

[Leverage HQ]

Hardison: You better say something. I swear on my mama, I will blow a hole through your bedroom and spider-man out the side of this building. Tell me something.

[Exterior Alley]

(Nate and Sophie are approaching the Pub’s back door)

Nate: We'll tell you something in a second, Hardison. We're coming through the back door.

Sophie: Shh.

(Sophie opens the door and looks inside, then looks back at Nate)

Nate: What?

Sophie: You're not gonna like this.

Nate: What?

(they walk into the back room to find every surface covered with papers and information)

Sophie: Somebody's been eating our porridge.

[McRory’s Pub]

(Nate walks into the pub to find Pieter and his men at the end of the bar talking to an older man)

Jimmy: You don't have to be so rough with him. This guy...

Hardison: Nate?

Nate: Hold on, Hardison. They're not here for you.

[Leverage HQ]

Hardison: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I knew it. Nobody can reverse my phone taps. Come on, man. I don't see why y'all were getting all excited. (moves back to desk)

[Interior Warehouse]

Simakov: All right, I'll do whatever you say. I still have the phone! (holds up red phone) What else do you want from me?

Parker: The red phone again.

Eliot: Nate, this guy's not our boss. He's another blackmail victim.

Nate: Yes, I know.

[Leverage HQ]

Nate: I'm about to meet their boss. (to Sophie) Go on.

(Sophie walks back into the back room as Nate approaches the end of the bar)

Nate: Hello, dad.

Jimmy: Nathan. (to Pieter) Give me a moment. I want a word with my son. Go on.

(Pieter walks away)

Jimmy: I got out a while ago.

Nate: Yeah, I-I know. I knew you were out.

Jimmy: I didn't see you at the prison gates waiting to pick me up.

Nate: Yeah, I was, uh, visiting mom's grave. So, uh, what's a, what's a washed-up bookie like yourself doing with a Russian blackmailing crew?

Jimmy: I went to prison 'cause I took the fall for the three families. I did my time for them like a stand-up guy. You heard what happened.

Nate: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was on the news. Yeah, I heard what happened. Artie Van, he turned state's evidence.

Jimmy: Turned state's evidence...

Nate: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Jimmy: Gave up his ledger. 20 years of payoffs. The McTeagues, the O'Hares, the Donnellys, all the big families are going down by law. Now, once upon a time, they would take care of someone who's gone inside for them. I went to jail for nothing. I want to get my piece.

Nate: With these guys? These guys that, that threaten children?

(Jimmy sighs)

Nate: What?

Jimmy: Geez, you always thought you were smarter than me, brighter, better than me. everybody in the neighborhood always treated me with respect, but my own son...

Nate: What did, what did you do to respect, exactly?

Jimmy: My son, my altar-boy son. Well, hey, listen to you. Never broke the law, you never broke a rule. Look at you now. You're a thief. You've done time.

Nate: If you know where I've been, then you know that this is my town now. And I don't want you running game in it.

Jimmy: All your life you thought you were better than me. Now you're trying to be me? You can't be me. You don't have the stones for that. You're not tough enough. You're not ruthless enough. You don't have what it takes. You remember the first time I brought you into my office?

[Flashback]

(Jimmy holds up three cards, two jacks and one queen)

Jimmy: Queen and her court. Got that? Watching? (turns over cards) Keep your eye on this. It's the lady. (shuffles cards) Now, pay attention. Which one?

(young Nate touches one card. Jimmy turns it over to reveal a jack)

Jimmy: You still don't get it, do you? You got to think this through, kid. You're just never gonna get it.

[McRory’s Pub]

Jimmy: You weren't good enough to know what I was doing then and you ain't good enough to know what I'm doing now. (grabs a bottle from behind the bar) By the way, I'm setting up, uh, in my old workshop in the back there. I'll be out by this weekend, so don't worry about it. (walks into the Poker room)

[Leverage HQ]

Nate: Okay. Run it.

(everyone looks at Nate uncomfortably)

Nate: Go ahead. Run it.

Hardison: You... you know what? Maybe we should just discuss first.

Parker: They feel weird going after your dad.

Nate: Well, I don't. Come on. Run it. Jimmy Ford. Hardison, tell us about Jimmy Ford.

Hardison (hits remote): All right. Jimmy. Jimmy, Jimmy Ford. Jimmy... your pop. He... he wore a lot of criminal hats, man. But, uh, he was, well-known in the neighborhood. I think people liked him. He, uh, helped some people get some money.

Nate: Forget it. No, no. Come on, you can't sugarcoat it. Come on. It's all right. It's all right. All right. You got to tell it like it is, all right?

(Hardison sits down)

Nate: Jimmy Ford, he was, uh, he started off as a bookie who worked for the McTeagues, all right? He ran every bet this side of Atlantic City. Once he had a fair amount of honest citizens in his debt, well, he made the transition into being a loan shark. Now, he used those contacts to become a fixer. So what he'd do is he'd take a bad guy that needed a job and a boss who needed a henchman, match them together. That-that's Jimmy Ford at his peak. King of the neighborhood.

Sophie: I don't know how this ties in with the whole cell phone/blackmail thing.

Hardison: Well, we've got multiple victims. There's Andrei, the telephone repair guy. Then there's Eliot's friend Simakov.

Nate: What does he do?

Hardison: Shipping. Industrial clothing, uniforms. Nothing remarkable. Then, following Pieter's phone, we found a third red phone.

Eliot: That's a dead end. We don't know who this guy is or what he does or why the Russians want him. And he's not gonna talk to us 'cause Pieter's boys already put the fear of God in him.

Nate: What is Jimmy's game?

Eliot: Well, I would imagine he has a chess board set up in the back room. Looks a lot like yours.

Nate: No, dad doesn't like chess. No, his game is three-card Monte. Just keep the cards moving. Don't show you the queen until he wants you to see the queen.

Sophie: All right, so, we don't have enough information to run a con on this guy. Not yet, anyway. So, um, why don't we just sit this one out?

Nate: Oh, no, no. No, no, we're gonna keep at this. We're gonna gather information.

Sophie: Let me be a bit clearer. Why don't you sit this one out?

Nate: Look, you want us to go after the bad guys, we're gonna go after the bad guys! And we're gonna go after them hard!

Sophie: Yeah, right. I said, "let's go after the bad guys." But not Jimmy Ford. You honestly think that you can put your own father behind bars?

Nate: You got to stop looking at him as my father. He's a mark like any other mark. He's hurting people. We can do this. It's what we do. It's our job to go after the bad guys.

Sophie: It's not your job to take down your own father.

Nate: No. It's my pleasure.

Hardison: Hey, guys, Andrei, our first victim... he just got a call.

Nate: Okay. Let's go.

[Exterior Police Station]

(the team walks away from the van, Eliot and Hardison wearing police badges around their necks)

Hardison: All right, Andrei's scared, but he's told us what they've asked him to do. He's been tapped because of his access. Now, he's supposed to get into the precinct on one of his routine maintenance calls and install a black box. With that, the Russians can spoof phone calls off the hardwired phone trunk.

Parker: Can you turn it off remotely?

Hardison: No, the system's too antiquated for a digital hack.

Eliot: So Jimmy can control which alarms reach the precinct and which don't.

Sophie: Like silent alarms? From banks?

Hardison: Or any building with a high security system.

Parker: So if we can't hack it, how do we stop him, then?

Sophie: Unh-unh. No, no, no. We mustn't stop him. If Andrei doesn't do what they say, Then they're gonna go after his family.

Nate: All right, so we don't stop him. We help him.

(Nate walks away. Sophie sighs and holds up a pair of handcuffs)

Sophie: Eliot.

(Eliot takes the cuffs and Sophie takes off her jacket. Parker walks away)

[Police Station]

(Hardison and Eliot lead a drunken Sophie into the precinct)

Sophie: Hey, hey, hey, bartender! Get me a drink!

Eliot: Quiet down. (to officer) Hey. Detective Moffat. This is Detective Davies. We're with district eight. What do you got?

Sophie: Who the hell are you, cupcake? Huh? Huh? You want to know who I am? I'm Viola. Viola Dagostino.

Hardison: Of the Dagostinos.

Eliot: We got her husband, we got a brother, and both uncles up at eight. Got her on a drunk and disorderly, heaven knows that's not gonna keep her away for long, we got to store her somewhere away from the press.

Officer: Yeah, I got you. Let me call it in. All right.

[Interior Ducts]

(Parker is hooking into some wires)

Parker: Nate, incoming.

[Exterior Police Station]

Nate (answers phone): Eighth district here. Ah, yes, yes. She's a handful. Yep.

[Police Station]

Sophie (to Eliot): One little drink.

Officer: Okay, you're good. Just take her downstairs to the drunk tank. It's empty.

Eliot: Gotcha.

(Eliot and Hardison lead Sophie away)

[Police Station Basement]

(Hardison pulls a black box off the wall and takes another box from Eliot)

Sophie: Eliot! Come on!

(Eliot walks over to her, pulling a key from his pocket)

Sophie: Make it snappy! Being handcuffed in a police station is a recurring bloody nightmare of mine.

Eliot (to Hardison): How do we look?

Hardison: This baby's a lot more sensitive than what Andrei has access to. See, we can block alarms, we can trigger alarms, but most importantly, we can track alarms. It should be synchronized. Nate?

[Exterior Police Station]

(Nate checks the remote)

Nate: All right, we're good.

[Police Station Basement]

Eliot: Let's get the hell out of here, then. Sophie?

Sophie: Unh-unh. No. My exit is with Parker. See you on the outside, cupcakes.

[Exterior Police Station]

(Eliot and Hardison round the corner of the building but the van is gone)

Eliot: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Where's he at?

Hardison: Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Eliot: He's gone!

Hardison: Lucille! Lucille 2.0!

Parker: He's off comms.

Sophie: He's off the reservation.

Eliot: I know what he's up to.

[Poker Room]

Jimmy: You interfered. How unlike you.

Pieter: Where I come from, this is not tolerated.

Jimmy: We're nowhere near where you come from, so just shut up.

Nate: Let me tell you what I did.

Jimmy: I know what you did. You, uh, let our repairman loose.

Nate: Well, this repairman, you know, was a liability, all right? He-he could've panicked, or he could've tipped off any of those cops at the precinct. I mean, he's, um, he's not like us.

Jimmy: Us?

Nate: Us. Yeah. Yeah. You know, using a civilian was a brute-force move, but, uh, let me show you a more elegant way of doing...

(Nate reaches into his jacket and the Russians react, pulling guns)

Nate: Whoa, whoa! No, that's all right. I'm just, uh, I'm getting a remote-control device out of my pocket, fellas. All right? I just want to show you a more elegant way of doing business with this remote. You have much finer control over your phone lines than you could ever hope for.

Jimmy: Well, this is an unexpected gift from you, my son. Thank you very much. Now you can go.

(Jimmy reaches for the remote but Nate moves it away)

Nate: No, no, no. No, no. Only I control the box. You try to take this from me, I will destroy the black box. I will. All right? I'll do it remotely.

Jimmy: Didn't see this coming.

Nate: Like I said, this is my town now. You want to pull a job this big in my town... I want in.

Pieter (points a gun at Nate): He's setting us up.

Nate: I just got out of prison. Ops.

Pieter: You escaped. And yet, you do not run. Why is this? Huh? Because you are, how do you say, a narc.

Nate: If you'd done your homework, you'd know that I set up a warden, brought him down, and got myself a free pass at the same time.

Pieter: Nobody could do this.

Nate: I did from inside a prison. Now, if I can do that, think what I could do for you. Or to you.

(Pieter cocks his weapon)

Jimmy: Well, carrot in one hand, stick in the other. That's a hard way to come at them.

Nate: Well, I learned from the best.

Jimmy (pushes Pieter’s gun away): He's in.

Nate: Okay. What's the plan?

Jimmy: All right. Pay attention.

Pieter (to Nate): I don't like you.

Nate: Gee, does that mean I can't come to your birthday party and ride the pony?

(Jimmy flips one of the boards to show a map)

[Leverage HQ]

(Nate is referring to maps on the monitors)

Nate: First Boston Independent, State Street Branch of the Boston Bank, Commonwealth Loan and Securities. Now...

Parker: First independent's got a Glenn-Reeder alarm system, series f-900. Two guards in the front, (laughs) one guard in the back. Cameras record, not monitored. Daily turnover, $2 million. State Street, mostly commercial papers and loans, but they do have bearer bonds in a basement lockdown room. Just takes a key and a retina scanner. Commonwealth (laughs) they-their alarm system's a holdover from the '70s, But (chuckles) But it's...

(everyone is looking at Parker, making her feel uncomfortable)

Parker: What? What do you guys do on your weekends?

Eliot: There's something wrong with you.

Sophie: So, which one's he gonna hit?

Nate: None of them?

[Poker Room]

Jimmy: None of them. But, see, since we control the precinct alarm system, the cops are gonna think they're being robbed. Now, think of this, Nathan. Three banks being robbed at the same time. They're gonna think it's Armageddon. Every cop in town is gonna be heading towards those three banks.

Nate: Yeah. And away from...?

Pieter: Mm-hmm.

[Leverage HQ]

Sophie: Away from what?

Nate: I don't know. He won't tell me. Yet. He won't tell me yet.

Eliot: You realize how many banks there are South of the precinct?

Parker: 67.

[Flashback]

(Young Nate watching Jimmy shuffle cards)

Jimmy: You keep your eye on the queen. You learn this, you'll be in good stead. Now, pay attention.

(Young Nate touches one of the cards)

Jimmy: Are you watching at all? (turns card over to show a jack) That's the best you can do? (turns over another jack) It's not the best you can do. What, are you being a wise guy with me?

[Leverage HQ]

Nate: Okay, guys, it's three-card Monte, see? We got to find the red queen. Right now, we got too many cards in play.

Hardison: There's still the third phone.

Nate: That's for you and Eliot. You're gonna find the guy, get his story, all right? Sophie, downstairs, that equipment in the back is used for the job. Go get us a look.

Sophie: Okay. I'll take Parker. What are you gonna do?

Nate: Me? I'm gonna go get my father to, uh, trust me enough to tell me the whole plan. I'm gonna go help him plan a bank robbery.

[Exterior Restaurant]

(inside, a man at the counter stands up and grabs a briefcase)

Jimmy: That's George Pimsleur, works at Hancock alarm security, and in that briefcase is a binder with all the schematics and codes of all the alarm systems they installed, including the alarm system on our real target.

Nate: Which is what?

(Pimsleur walks out of the restaurant and crosses the street)

Jimmy: Oh, my boys kick his teeth in, they take his wallet, his briefcase, watch, maybe, and over in five minutes.

Nate: Eh, well, we could. Or we could, uh, take what we want, and the mark never knows he's been hit.

Jimmy: How many men?

Nate: Two. You and me.

(Jimmy laughs and follows Nate across the street. Pimsleur pays the parking attendant, who walks away)

Jimmy: What... what are we doing?

Nate: Okay, you got to... you got to limp.

Jimmy: Which leg?

Nate: Y-your left leg. All right. We're gonna do the pill scam. (hands Jimmy a bottle of pills) There you go.

Nate: Excuse me, sir? Sir!

(Pimsleur turns around)

Nate: I'm sorry to bother you. Do you have change for a $20? (holds up a bill) Uh, the machine's broke over here. I got to get my car out. Got to get my dad to dialysis.

Pimsleur (puts briefcase on car and reaches in pocket): Yeah, yeah. Sure, sure. Hang on.

Nate: Thank you so much.

Jimmy (drops his bottle of pills): Oh!

Pimsleur: Oh, no! Oh!

Nate: Oh, dad. Oh, dear.

(Pimsleur and Nate go down on the ground to pick up the pills)

Jimmy: Those are so expensive. I appreciate your... (falls against car, grabbing briefcase)

Pimsleur: My mom's got heart trouble. These damn pills cost a fortune, I know.

(Jimmy goes into briefcase and gets the paperwork he wanted)

Nate: Yeah. There's one over there, too.

(Pimsleur gets the last pill as Jimmy shoves the paper on his pocket. The men stand up)

Nate: Yeah. Ah, I sure appreciate that. You all right there, dad?

Jimmy: Yeah, yeah, feel just fine.

Nate: Okay, we're almost... okay.

(Pimsleur gives Nate the change he asked for)

Jimmy: Your mother...

Nate: Thank you.

Jimmy: Would be very proud of you.

Pimsleur: No problem, sir. You both take care now.

(Nate and Jimmy walk away)

Jimmy: Nice of the guy. That's not bad.

Nate: Oh, well, thank you. It worked out, didn't it?

Jimmy: My little boy.

[McRory’s Pub]

(Sophie and Parker are standing together, Parker looking at her phone)

Parker: Oh, Hardison got background on Pieter. Okay, ex-soviet army, three counts armed robbery.

Sophie: No, no, no. I want the good stuff. Give it to me.

Sophie: All right. He's from Lipetsk. That is close to Penza. And his mother's name is Rada.

Parker: Okay, so what are we thinking? The Berlin shuffle?

Sophie: Unh-unh. Little orphan Annie.

Waitress (walks by): Excuse me.

Parker (holds up waitress’ apron): Need this?

Sophie: Thanks, Parker.

Parker: Yeah.

(Sophie puts on apron and walks away)

[Poker Room]

(Parker peeks in the back door, then closes it. Across the room, Sophie walks in from the pub, holding a tray of glasses and cups)

Pieter: Whoa, whoa, whoa! You cannot come in here!

Sophie: oh! Sorry. Sorry. I-I-I-I... (drops a glass) Oh! Ugh, chyort voz'mi! (crouches to pick up glass)

Pieter: Vy russkaya?

Sophie: Huh?

Pieter: You're Russian?

Sophie: Oh, no, no, no. Nuh-unh. No. That was, uh, something my father used to say. Is it bad?

(Parker sneaks in the back door, looking in a large bag nearby)

Pieter: No, it's not so bad. Your parents are Russian?

Sophie: Yeah, from, um... oh, uh... Penzo? I--

Pieter: Penza! I'm from Lipetsk. What is your name?

(Parker takes pictures of items in the sack)

Sophie: Rada.

Pieter: No, this is my mother's name... Rada.

Sophie: Shut up! I wish I did speak some Russian. You know, my mom and dad died when I was just a little kid, and she didn't want me speaking it, so...

(Parker takes pictures of items on table)

Pieter: And for you to say "my name's Rada," Menya zovut Rada.

Sophie: No, no, no, you got to go slower. Mañana-- no! That's Spanish!

[Exterior Park]

(Hardison looks at his phone, pointed at a coffee card surrounded by police)

Hardison: Yeah, next red phone is right ahead. We just got to figure out who has it.

Officer: Hey, Moffat!

Hardison: Hey.

Eliot: Hey. How you doing?

Officer: What are you guys doing back in our district?

Eliot: Oh, uh, I think you guys are holding a gun that was tagged in a case we caught.

Officer: Hey, let me get you one here. This is the best coffee this side of town.

Eliot: All right.

Officer: You know, you want to get in there before the shift changes. Yeah. 'cause that evidence, that ships out to Holyoke first thing tomorrow morning, and that is a drive you do not want to make.

(Hardison uses his phone to pinpoint that the coffee vender has the red phone)

Eliot: I don't want to make that drive.

Officer: No!

(Vendor hands Eliot a cup of coffee)

Officer: There you go.

Eliot: Thank you so much. All right, good to see you. Thank you so much for this.

(Eliot and Hardison move away from the coffee cart)

Eliot: You sure that's the same red phone?

Hardison: Yeah. Look, is it me or does this make less sense every time we find something out?

Eliot: Pretty much.

[Poker Room]

(Nate and Jimmy walk in)

Nate: It sure is.

Pieter: You were supposed to call us! Huh? To hit the alarm man.

Jimmy: Ah, yeah, well, Nathan here... he took care of it with a little soft touch. (hands paper to Pieter)

Nate: Hey.

(Jimmy pulls out two glasses)

Nate: Ah. Yes, please.

Pieter: It's good work.

Jimmy (pouring drinks): Here you go, Sonny boy. That.

(they tap glasses and drink)

Nate: Yeah, yeah.

(Pieter pulls a gun and taps Nate in the back)

Pieter: You can go.

Nate: No, actually, I'm not going anywhere. He says I'm in, I'm in.

Pieter: I am so sick of this idea about you...

(Nate turns and punches Pieter in the face. His gun falls to the table and he stumbles back into the arms of his men)

Nate: Stop waving that gun in my face. You're so tough, prove it.

(Pieter punches Nate in the face, he falls back against his father)

Nate: Oh!

Jimmy: Ah! All right. Go on in there. Come on. I got your back.

Nate: Thanks, dad. Yeah, yeah.

Jimmy: There you go.

Nate (holds up his hand): Come on. We don't have to do this. It's all right.

(Nate grabs Pieter by the shoulders and head butts him. They continue to fight as Jimmy watches, grinning)

[McRory’s Bar]

(Nate holds a bag of ice to his head. Jimmy slides a glass down in front of him)

Jimmy: "Stop waving a gun in my face and prove it."

Nate: Yeah, well, I had to have it out with the guy. I mean, I'd rather he punch me in the face than shoot me in the back.

Jimmy: No, no. You really went at it back there.

Nate: What was it you used to always say to me? "you're too much of a thinker, Nathan. You need to, uh, be-be more of a scrapper to survive."

Jimmy: Yeah, well, I'm never wrong.

Nate: That, too, you used to always say.

Jimmy: Well, I gotta tell you, I doubted your intentions when you came to join this lot.

Nate: Join this lot? No. Joining you. You. These guys, they're a dime a dozen, pop. I mean...

Jimmy: Yeah, but that dime a dozen are getting tougher every year, ain't it?

Nate: What do you hope to get out of this, uh, this plan you're cooking up?

Jimmy: Without giving you any particulars, I plan to make a small fortune out of this, Nathan.

Nate: Wait, wait, wait. So one last job?

Jimmy: If there's enough money in it, yeah.

Nate: Okay. And then?

Jimmy: Get on a boat. Go back to where your grandfather came from. You know, uh, you still got some pretty cousins back there, you know.

Nate: So, all right, so this, this-this big last score, and the great Jimmy Ford, what, goes to Ireland to retire? That, that's quite a picture. You ever wish ma was joining you?

Jimmy: She didn't really understand me, Nathan. But she loved me. That's more important.

[Leverage HQ]

(Nate walks downstairs to where Sophie is seated at the counter)

Sophie: You were up late.

Nate: Yeah, I was out trying to get information from my dad. (puts on jacket)

Sophie: Oh, good. So you know what bank he's gonna hit, then. Today's the day.

Nate: I know.

Sophie: Nate, this would be really hard on anyone. You don't have to do this.

Nate: Yes, I do. I'm the only one who can.

[Poker Room]

(Nate approaches Poker room)

Nate: All right, dear old dad, you’re now gonna tell me everything, Because I...

(Nate enters Poker room to find it clean of all of Jimmy’s things)

Nate: No, come on.

(he searches his pockets to find the remote control to the black box missing)

[Flashback]

(Pieter punches Nate in the face, he falls back on his father)

Jimmy: All right, go on in there. Come on. I got your back.

(Jimmy takes the remote from Nate’s pocket)

Nate: Thanks, dad. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Jimmy: There you go.

(Hardison walks in to find the room empty)

Hardison: Nate, what's the deal?

Nate: He cleared out. They're on the job, and we have no idea what the job is.

Hardison: We got the warehouse guy and the coffee guy...

Nate: No, no, we have no idea what he's doing.

Hardison: ...already in play.

[Exterior Street]

(Pieter and his men are taking boxes from the back of an SUV. Pieter opens one box and shows Jimmy the clothing inside)

[Poker Room]

(Sophie walks in unrolling a map)

Sophie: Look what I found in the alley.

Nate: Oh, great. A map that we've seen before.

Eliot: Hey, this is not her fault. You're the one who let your dad walk out of here.

Parker: Oh, good, we got our room back.

Sophie: Nate, the plans you got were from the Hancock alarm company. We just need Hardison to figure out how many banks in this radius have got Hancock alarms.

Parker: 23.

Hardison: Assuming it is a bank. 'cause I don't know what you would be doing with one of these in a bank. It's the same one that Parker saw in Pieter's bag. A bar-code scanner. It scans a bar-code label and compares it to a remote database. But what are they doing with it?

Eliot: We still got the coffee guy in play. What's he up to?

[Exterior Park]

(Vendor puts the red phone back in his pocket and dumps a few pills into a coffee cup)

Hardison: It's a lot of cops, man. Uh, maybe he's drugging them.

[Poker Room]

Hardison: Slows down response time.

Eliot: That's a good idea. He could have drugged them. You think he'd drug the whole precinct? Come on!

[Flashback]

Jimmy: All right, which one?

(Young Nate chooses the wrong card)

Jimmy: You're not paying attention. Pay attention.

(Young Nate chooses the wrong card)

Jimmy: Are you watching at all? We got the lady here. Which one?

(Young Nate chooses the wrong card)

Jimmy: We got to start all over again? Pay attention. Think about it. You're never gonna get this, are you? You're just never gonna get it.

(Young Nate chooses the wrong card)

Jimmy: These are not queens! You understand me?!

(Young Nate chooses the wrong card)

Jimmy: Don't get me pissed off! Does it look like there's a queen in there?

(Jimmy turns over all three cards. None of them are queens)

Jimmy: You're never gonna get this, are you? You can't figure that out for yourself? I want an answer.

[Poker Room]

Nate: Guys, I know where he's going. What's the trick to three-card Monte? The queen's never even on the table. It's not a bank. Hardison, where do the police keep evidence, I mean the really valuable stuff?

[Flashback]

Officer: Yeah, cause that evidence, that ships out to Holyoke First thing tomorrow morning.

[Poker Room]

Nate: In the district, then they transfer it out. Russians. The Russians. Remember that big bust last month?

[Flashback]

Hardison: They lost $20 million in merchandise to the police. That's gotta hurt.

[Poker Room]

Nate: They got to get drugs, guns, and $20 million.

Eliot: It's on the move. Today.

Nate: That's correct.

[Exterior Park]

(Police officers are getting coffee from the cart]

Officer 2: Ready to get out of here, boys?

Officer 3: Mm-hmm.

Officer 2: Thanks. Come on, guys. Let's go.

Officer 3: All right.

(Jimmy watches from a bench nearby, pressing a button on his remote, which triggers the black box)

[Police Station]

Officer: Whoa, we got a silent alarm call at first Boston independent.

[Exterior Park]

(Jimmy pushes another button on the remote)

[Police Station]

Officer: Oh, we got another alarm call. This one is at Boston bank at state. We got a third one! It's commonwealth. (into radio) Dispatch, this is district nine duty. We have got multiple code ones at the following sites... Don't just stand there. Roll out. Get some backup to the cruisers.

Officer 4: Who do I bring?

Officer: Get everybody out there!

Officer 4 (running toward the door): Come on, let's go! Let's go!

(Officers begin scrambling to follow him)

Officer: Yeah, I need every available unit rolling immediately. First Boston, Boston Bank State Street, Commonwealth Loan and Securities, a multiple code one.

[Exterior Police Station]

(a police van runs erratically down the road as the driver yawns and drinks coffee. Another officer walks out in front of it and holds up his hands to stop the van)

Pieter (dressed as cop): You okay?

Cop: I can't seem to keep my eyes open.

(Pieter grabs a set of keys as one of his men climbs into the van. Pieter opens the back door to find two officers sleeping in the back)

[Police Station]

Officer: No, I can't get any confirmation. I told you, Boston Bank, First Boston Independent, and Commonwealth.

(Jimmy walks in, holding a clipboard)

Jimmy: Evidence transfer?

Officer: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're good. (into phone) I just need bodies out there. Get the 2nd, the 4th, the 10th districts over there.

[Exterior Police Station]

(a police car drives away as Pieter and his men get out of the van. Jimmy opens the back door to the station to let them in)

Pieter (in Russian to one of his men): If they wake up, kill them.

(the man nods and Pieter goes into the police station, followed by Jimmy)

[Exterior Police Station]

Nate: All right, you know the plan.

Hardison: Run and hack at the same time... sure.

Eliot: All right, wait, wait a second. Let's go over this, all right? Stop. Why don't you just tell the cops everything?

Nate: The Russians could start shooting.

Parker: Still, there's enough cops to handle...

Nate: All right, we stick to the plan, the Russians will go down.

Sophie: And your father.

Nate: Oh, I've got him. I want to look him in the eye when I put him down.

[Evidence Locker]

(Jimmy and Pieter walk in)

Jimmy: Yeah, you're expecting us.

Clerk: Where's your transfer order?

Jimmy: That's it.

Clerk: Let me see that.

(one of Pieters men hits the clerk, knocking him out. Jimmy hits his remote and the alarm disengages)

Jimmy: All right. Start your timer. Five-minute grace, then the system resets.

(Pieter and his men enter the locker)

Jimmy: All the evidence is bar-coded. You'll find your stuff in here someplace, all your guns, all your drugs.

(one man is using a bar code scanner while another accesses a computer)

Man: Okay, it's good.

Man 2: Go, go!

(the men begin gathering boxes of stuff)

[Police Station]

(Nate walks in with Sophie, who is pointing at the officer)

Sophie: Oh, look at that! He's the one!

Nate: Officer, my name is I'm Jimmy Popodokolos, and I represent miss Dagostino here. Yeah.

Officer: We're a little busy here. Every cop in the world is hitting the streets right now.

Nate: Okay.

Sophie: Well, I am gonna sue you, and I am gonna sue the city.

Nate: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Here's the thing, what we need to do is I want to see the department's legal counsel right now.

Officer: Fine. Just wait over there. I'll have somebody escort you down to legal in a minute.

Sophie: You better listen to him, wise guy.

Nate: You're doing the right thing.

Officer: Rolling immediately to first Boston independent, Boston...

[Hallway]

(Jimmy walks up the stairway of a nearly empty building, looking for the organized crime division. He peeks in the door and walks inside)

[Organized Crime Division]

(Jimmy walks in, looking at boards representing the three big families. He sees the safe and walks over to it, cracking the combination and opening the door. He takes out a ledger)

Jimmy: Artie Van's ledger.

(Jimmy walks away from the safe and the door closes behind him, showing Nate standing behind it)

Nate: It's gonna end right here, dad. (raises gun and points it at Jimmy) You ready?

Jimmy: How'd you know?

Nate: Oh, you'd never take the money and run.

Jimmy: $5 million's a lot of money, Nathan.

Nate: For you, it's never about the money. I knew that growing up, watching you. It was about respect for you.

Jimmy: Artie Van's ledger.

Nate: Yeah, they made copies.

Jimmy: Oh, you know that won't hold up. The original disappears, the case against the big families goes away, and who do they owe? Jimmy Ford, the biggest fixer in town. Let's join up. Together, we can run this town.

Nate (lowers gun): It's too late.

Jimmy: What do you mean?

Nate: My people are gonna take down the Russians, and any minute now, the cops are gonna come through that door.

Jimmy: I'm not going back to prison.

Nate: All right. (raises gun again) Right here.

Jimmy: You can't do this. I could, but you're your mother's son.

Nate: Go. (lowers gun) Go. Get out.

(Jimmy walks out, blowing a kiss before closing the door. Nate sits down heavily, putting the gun down on the desk and rubbing his face)

[Exterior Police Station]

(Eliot edges along the side of the police van, easing around the edge and knocking on the door)

Eliot (in Russian): Open up!

(the door opens and Eliot hits the man in the crotch)

Man: Oooohhh!

(Eliot pulls the man half out of the van and knocks him out, then shoves him back inside and closes the door before moving away)

[Evidence Locker]

Pieter: Move, move, move! (scans bar code on boxes and looks at the scanner) Napkins?! (scans another box, which shows stoneware) This cannot be right! Time!

(one of his men holds up a phone that shows nearly two minutes remaining)

Pieter: Is this the right time? I keep scanning. More boxes! More boxes!

(Hardison is hiding not too far away, working on his laptop, replacing the correct information for that of housewares)

Pieter: Move, move!

[Organized Crime Division]

(Nate is still sitting at the desk when Parker pops in through a set of doors near the ceiling)

Parker: You let him go.

Nate: Yeah. I had to.

Parker: I know.

(Parker tosses Nate a rope and he ties it around himself)

[Evidence Locker]

(the security system beeps and the door closes)

Pieter: No, no, no, no, no! (looks at phone) It's not time! (clock resets to two minutes and counting) No! (runs to gate and hits it hard) Stupid thing!

(Hardison is standing in the hall, smiling)

Hardison: Age of the geek, baby. Stay strong.

(Hardison walks away. A number of officers enter the area, holding guns))

Cop 2: Don't move! Hands in the air!

Officer: Well, look at this. You guys did everything but cuff yourselves. (opens the gate) Help 'em out, boys.

(other cops move in to arrest the Russians)

[Exterior Park]

Jimmy (on phone): Aidan McTeague. J... yeah, this is Jimmy Ford. Damn straight. Say, I got some good news for you. Yeah, I got the ledger right here. What's that? What... what would you want to do that for? Hello?

Jimmy: Uh, Jimmy Ford for Bridgette O'Hare. It's a gift. Hello?

Jimmy: Ronin Donnelly, I worked for your father for 30 years. I wouldn't...

(a black car drives up slowly. A man leans out the window with a machine gun pointed at Jimmy)

Jimmy: Well, no, no, I... Mr. Donnelly, it's not true.

(Jimmy sees the car and dives behind a brick pillar)

Jimmy: Whoa!

(the man continues to fire as the car drives past)

Jimmy: Oh, God.

(Jimmy sinks to the ground. His phone rings and he answers it)

Jimmy: Geez. Nathan, what the hell have you done?

[Docks]

(Jimmy walks up to where Nate is standing, waiting for himi)

Nate: Yeah, I called each of the families. I told them that you were the one who stole the evidence against them. They were grateful. Until I laid out the deal.

[Flashback]

Nate (on phone): He wants $500,000 to destroy it. Otherwise, it goes right back to the evidence room. Not a Penny less, Mr. McTeague.

[Docks]

Jimmy: You blackmailed them?

Nate: No. You blackmailed them.

Jimmy: They almost killed me.

Nate: Of course they did. Yeah, you've got a price on your head that's bigger than most of my team's scores. I mean, who wouldn't want that kind of scratch?

Jimmy: You want me killed, then?

Nate: See that boat behind you?

Jimmy (turns to look): You're running me out of town? My own son?

Nate: Cheap passage booked under "Jimmy Logue." You'll be in Galway in two weeks.

Jimmy: Logue. Your mother's maiden name. How sweet of you.

Nate: Oh, you better hurry up. A man with no suitcase is likely to look suspicious, so try to act natural.

Jimmy: You betrayed your own father. You're more ruthless than me. Crueler than me. Maybe you are better than me, huh? I'm proud of you, son. (walks toward boat)

Nate: Hey, enjoy your retirement.

(Jimmy looks back, then continues on. Nate watches for a moment, then turns to see the team waiting for him. He walks through them and they follow)

Sophie: That was... kind, what you did.

Parker: So, uh, is Nate gonna be nice now?

Hardison: Don't count on it.
